A paid internship at SCAG offers students practical work experience, providing them with an opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with experts/colleagues in their academic field of study. Under general supervision, an Intern at SCAG will perform a variety of routine administrative and technical duties in support of a department, which may include researching, writing, and presenting reports and recommendations.

SCAG is currently seeking 2 interns in the Information Technology Division, supporting our IT Project Management Office and Application Development and Support department.
 
IT Project Management Office
The IT Project Management Office intern will provide support in managing projects, communicating with stakeholders, documenting processes. The intern should possess basic project management knowledge and strong communication skills.

The IT Project Management Office is closely involved in IT governance, policy development, process improvement, communication and training, and IT service management and delivery for the organization. The team applies advanced traditional and agile project management knowledge in delivering critical projects to various SCAG business units with a goal of on-time and on-budget delivery that meet business requirements and project budgets. The team creates and maintains a uniform approach to project management and serve as a change agent, providing continuous improvement through improved and enhanced methodologies.

Application Development and Support

The Application Development and Support intern will support the department in Enterprise GIS (EGIS) implementation, maintenance, support, and Planning Systems development and support. The intern should have a basic knowledge of application administration, programming, and productive applications. The intern should possess excellent time management and organizational skills.

The Application Development and Support team is responsible for many of SCAG’s core technology systems and involved in multiple SCAG initiatives. The team develops, manages, tests, supports, maintains, and consults on applications including region shaping metropolitan planning systems, operationally focused finance and support systems, and public facing information sharing systems. Some of the current applications and technologies used include Microsoft Great Plains (GP), WorkPlace, OnBase, Microsoft CRM, custom Inter-Government Review (IGR), custom Finance Management Systems (FMS), custom Active Transportation Database (ATDB), Microsoft Dynamics 365, ESRI ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, ServiceNow, Microsoft SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and Crystal Reports.

Internships will approximately begin late-July and will be limited to a maximum of 29 hours a week for the duration of the internship (999 hours). Interns are expected to work at least 15 hours per week.

In this role you can expect to:

IT Project Management Office

  • Write and edit process documentation, including reports, user manuals, briefings and presentations, functional descriptions, guidelines, and reports on project deliverables to meet IT PMO requirements.
  • Assist members of the PMO with starting and running projects and communicating across internal departments and external partners.
  • Create project boards using SCAG PM tools and assist with developing new templates
  • Maintain project boards with status updates, notes, and tasks for projects in-flight
    Other duties as assigned

Application Development and Support 

  • User, content, and credit maintenance in the RDP application
  • Generate and analyze application usage reports
  • Support data clean up and migration efforts
  • Monitor and respond to basic support requests
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in a university or community college taking classes toward an Information Technology, Computer Science, Project Management, Business, Data Science degree, or who has graduated within the previous 12 months.
