A paid internship at SCAG offers students practical work experience, providing them with an opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with experts/colleagues in their academic field of study. Under general supervision, an Intern at SCAG will perform a variety of routine administrative and technical duties in support of a department, which may include researching, writing, and presenting reports and recommendations.

SCAG is currently seeking seven interns in the Planning Division, supporting our Planning Strategy, Mobility Planning, Sustainable and Resilient Development, and Modeling and Forecasting departments.

Planning Strategy – (3 Internship Positions Available)

The Planning Strategy Department is seeking three interns to fill the below roles:

The Local Information Services intern will assist in preparing documentation, reports, and data with SCAG’s subject matter experts on various technical assistance topics. This position will provide technical assistance related to tabular and spatial data processing to internal and external stakeholders. In addition, this intern will engage in research activities related to regional/urban planning.

The Performance Strategy intern will perform research and analysis for safety, equity, and overall performance. This position assists with conducting research and preparing a literature review for proposed plan strategies for achieving Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reductions and with Environmental Justice (EJ)/equity analysis for Connect SoCal 2021. In addition, this intern will support the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Equity Working Group, Equity Working Group, and Safe and Active Streets Working Groups by preparing materials for key stakeholders and members of the public by helping to document meetings.

The Connect SoCal intern will support strategy research by conducting a literature review, data collection, and data assembly. This position will be assigned to the Coworking strategy but may be assigned to assist with other strategies as needed. In addition, this intern will support the development of the draft document and provide copy editing and quality control support. Lastly, this position will contribute to the administrative aspect of SCAG’s Connect SoCal outreach activities including supporting the other business unit staff with file organization and management as well as logistics as needed to collaborate internally and with the consultant team.

The Planning Strategy Department consists of 16 full-time staff and plays a central role in aligning SCAG’s plans and programs toward a common vision through leading the process for developing and implementing Connect SoCal. Planning Strategy Department staff work collaboratively across the Planning Division to produce innovative solutions that improve the quality of life for Southern Californians and provide information and value-added services to enhance member agencies’ planning and operations and promote regional collaboration.

Mobility Planning – (2 Internship Positions Available)

The Mobility Planning Department is seeking two interns to fill the below roles:

The Technology and Innovation intern will assist with tasks related to broadband, smart and clean cities, ITS, and clean tech. This position will contribute to GIS Analysis, Story Map, and for Broadband, Smart Cities and other associated programs, data procurement and entry for Broadband, Clean Tech, Smart Cities, ITS and others. In addition, this intern will coordinate and take notes during meetings, workshops, and webinars as well as draft memorandums, proofread, research policy, legislative updates, and funding opportunities. This position will assist with Connect SoCal Technical Reports, research on innovative technology and how it can reduce vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions, and assist with marketing, web page design/layout, and updating contact lists.

The Goods Movement intern will work on projects and assignments that involve learning about the Goods Movement system and infrastructure within the SCAG region, including national and global relationships. This position will assist with the cultivation of a strong focus on goods movement data sources and information from industry sources, Connect SoCal Goods Movement Technical Report, and other related information. In addition, this intern will assist with the development and maintenance of goods movement databases and the development of analysis techniques using goods movement database tools. Lastly, this position will support transferring data/analysis through Geographic Information System and assist with visualization development using applications like Tableau/others, PowerPoint, etc.

The Mobility Planning and Goods Movement Department works to improve mobility, optimize the goods movement network, and broaden transportation choices. The Department accomplishes this through demand management, multi-modal system integration, increasing economic efficiency, and safety and air quality improvements, supported by technology and innovation.  The Department comprises three Business Units: Multimodal Integration, Technology and Innovation, and Goods Movement.

Sustainable and Resilient Development – (1 Internship Position Available)

The Sustainable and Resilient Development intern will conduct research to fortify implementation strategies for mitigating impacts of extreme heat (episodic and chronic) that help reduce GHG emissions, improve health outcomes, and increase mode shift from SOVs to shared mobility. These strategies can be used for incorporation into Connect SoCal 2024 and its associated PEIR. The particular focus will be placed on supportive strategies to mitigate the impacts of extreme heat on vulnerable communities. This would be a holistic approach that combines increased street tree density and shade structures; supplemented urban forest on larger public tracts (e.g. school campuses, parks, institutions); cool street applications and technologies; BMP’s for stormwater management (bioswales, stormwater runoff capture/infiltration/quality); and complete streets policy integration. In addition, this position will help structure collaboration with the State’s Integrated Climate Adaptation and Resilience Program (ICARP) and the CA Department of Insurance and assess the demand and viability of insurance products for extreme heat implementation strategies, increasing the likelihood of local adoption.

The Sustainable and Resilient Development Department focuses on advancing and implementing strategies and tools in support of Connect SoCal, the region’s adopted Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy. The Department is organized into business units and program areas with work focused on three areas: Resilient Communities and Resource Conservation, Sustainable and Connected Communities, and Regional Demographics and Growth Vision.

Modeling and Forecasting – (1 Internship Position Available)

The Modeling and Forecasting intern will assist with the Regional Geospatial Database Development for Connect SoCal 2024 LDX process by supporting the GIS data update process based on feedback submitted by local jurisdictions on the GIS dataset. This position will assist in producing maps for SoCal 2024 plan development. In addition, this intern will assist in data collection, data cleaning, and basic analysis for small area forecast, transportation model, heavy-duty model, scenario planning model, and SCS off-model analysis.

The Modeling and Forecasting Department consists of three business units: Modeling, Growth Forecasting, and GIS. This department collaborates with local jurisdictions to develop socioeconomic growth forecasts for planning activities and provides modeling services for developing SCAG’s plans, programs, and projects. This department is also responsible for geospatial data development, analysis and visualization functions for SCAG’s innovative planning and data-driven decision-making processes.

Internships will approximately begin late-July and will be limited to a maximum of 29 hours a week for the duration of the internship (499 hours). Interns are expected to work at least 15 hours per week.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An undergraduate or graduate student who is currently enrolled in a university or community college taking classes towards a Business, Computer Science, Economics, Environmental Science, Planning, Policy, Public Administration, Geography degree, or other related fields, or who has graduated within the previous 12 months.
